Srinagar- Two local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in a firefight with government forces in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said Monday.
The encounter, according to a police spokesperson, erupted when a joint team of police, the army’s 1RR, and the paramilitary CRPF personnel launched a cordon and search operation in the Nowpora-Kherpora village of Kulgam on Monday.
During the search operation, he said, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.
“However in order to evacuate the civilians trapped around the encounter site, the joint team ensured the evacuation of all civilians to the safer places,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, the spokesperson said that two local LeT militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter. He identified the duo as Zubair Ahmad Mir of Qaimoh and Idrees Ahmad Dar resident of Kulpora, Kulgam.
As per police records, he said, both the killed militants were categorized and involved in several cases including attacks on police/security forces and “civilian atrocities including the killing of PRIs”.
Zubair, the spokesperson said was active since Aug-2021 and was trying to revive the militant folds by recruiting & motivating the gullible youth including Idrees Ahmad to join “terror folds”.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition have been recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
“In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and an investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” he added.
According to the spokesperson, IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar termed this operation as important as the encounter site is very close to the highway on the yatra route, and LeT (TRF) has been issuing threats to the yatra.
Pak Intruder Killed Along IB In Jammu: BSF
A report from Jammu said one Pakistani intruder was killed by BSF troops along the International Border (IB) in the Jammu district early Monday.
A BSF said the area domination party noticed the intruder heading towards the border fence with an intention to cross over.
“Our party challenged him to stop but he paid no attention and continued his movement towards the fence”, he said.
BSF troops fired three rounds at the intruder, they said, adding his body was found close to the fence.
The body was handed over to the police.
