Nature of Damage of Pea pod borer
The caterpillar stage pod borer is harmful to the pea plant. Its larva makes a web, with the help of which it damages the pod by entering the pea seed. with the help of which it penetrates
- pod borer creates a new larva-like web-like structure that comes out of the egg, inside the pod. After 2-3 days of feeding inside the seed, the caterpillars come out to feed superficially on the seed.
- pod borers migrate from one sheet to another inside the pot without completely consuming the damaged seeds.
- In later stages of damage, the pods become discolored watery in appearance and emit a smell.
- The average yield of peas is reduced by 23.9% due to pod eating by larvae. On average 77.6% of seeds are damaged due to infestation of Pea pod borers.
The life Cycle of pod borer
pod borer life cycle is four developmental stages the life cycle of a pea pod borer. Which are called the egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
The egg stage of Pea pod borer
this stage is the first stage of the life cycle of pea pod borer, in which the insect lays eggs on the pea plant.
- pod borer lays eggs in the blossoms, buds, twinges, and leaves of the pea plant.
- pod borers are generally deposited singly, but something also hatched of 4 -6 eggs. A single female Layed 44 to 178 eggs in our life span.
- The incubation period of Pea pod borer is 4-7 days, if there is an adverse condition, it can increase up to 33 days.
The larva stage of Pea pod borer
This is the second developmental stage of the Pea pod borer, in which the eggs are hatched, from which the caterpillars emerge.
- The color of the new caterpillar which emerges from the egg of pod borer is yellowish. Which turns milky white after eating 10 to 12 hours. Which later turns light green in 6 to 7 days. Ultimately it becomes Pinky swan full-fed.
- The Larvae bore into the pot and feed on grain inside after more than one lover is observed.
- The larval period of the Pea pod borer ends in 10 to 17 days. Cannibalism has also been observed amongst young and between young and older caterpillars.
Pupa stage of Pea pod borer
This is the third developmental stage of pod borer, in which the fully grown larva emerges from the pod and goes into the soil for the population.
- Population cocoons take place in 3-4 cm deep soil.
- Pre-pupal stage of Pea pod borer in 3-4 days. it happens. Its pupal stage ends in 10 to 20 days depending on the temperature.
The adult stage of Pea pod borer
The adult pod borer’s life cycle is the third developmental stage, in which the larvae emerge from the cocoons in the form of moths.
- The emergence of moths takes place at night and in a few cases in the early hours of the morning.
- pod borer’s moths are gray. Their wingspan is 25mm.
- The four wings are dark lines and are interparent with the Ochreous scale. The moths emerge from February to March.
- The pest breeds throughout the year and the total life cycle is completed in 27 to 46 days. it passes through five generations.
- The moth starts appearing in the field during the last week of February. All the stages of this pest are available in the field during March and April.
Management of Pea pod borer
