It is an Art and Science of decoration of a tract of land with ornamental plants and other garden materials so as to produce a picturesque and naturalistic effect.
The naturally existing features like undulations, terraces as well as plain surfaces are used to give a natural effect.

Landscape gardening

It may be described as the application of garden forms, methods and materials with a view to improving the landscape. The art of designing is known as “Landscape Architecture,” although the older term “Landscape gardening” is also popular.

Define Ornamental Gardens

In planning a garden, several factors like the size of the house, the space available for the garden, availability of water, the cost of laying the garden and its maintenance, have to be taken into consideration.

A garden is planned primarily to suit the tastes of the people of the household and locality. There is no rigid system in garden planning and each system is open to modification to suit the environment and other factors.

Important considerations of  gardening

  • A garden needs to be one’s own creation and not an imitation, giving due thought to the native atmosphere.
  • Overcrowding of the plants should be avoided.
  • Take advantage of natural topography while designing a garden
  • A perfect harmony of different components is the essence of landscape gardening.
  • Before coming up with a design one should make sure for what purpose the garden is – utility or beauty or each.
